Slow feeding involves the use of small holed hay nets. An ideal net size is 40mm x 40mm squares, this creates a situation where the horse or pony cannot gorge his feed and must take smaller amounts in each mouthful, whilst still being able to eat sufficient amounts.
Particularly ideal also for horses or ponies prone to Laminitis and on restricted grazing or are kept stabled.
The use of a small holed hay net prevents wastage as hay is not trodden into the ground or blown around in the wind. There is a large financial bonus also as hay will last much longer when your horse is eating it slowly, taking smaller mouthfuls. Horses are kept happily eating. Save hay, save money and save time putting out hay – use a slow feeder system!
Nets are available in various sizes – smaller nets hold up to half a square bale, larger nets for whole bales of hay and nets for use on large round bales. Slow feeders also come in a variety of designs.
Please remember that, ideally, horses need to be able to eat with their head in the natural lowered position as they do when grazing. It is best to have your hay net as close to ground level as possible. This allows the lower jaw to slide forward into its proper placement for mastication of feed creating even wear on the molars. It also keeps their airways open, aids in respiration and mucus can drain freely.
If your horse is shod, extra care needs to be taken and the hay can be placed in a box or crate and tied securely.
